A new day centre has opened for people with autism.

Mayor of Gravesham Cllr Derek Sales cut the ribbon at the Windmill Centre, Windmill Street, Gravesend, on Friday.

Gravesham MP Adam Holloway joined parents and carers at the ceremony.

The National Autism Society (NAS) centre will offer one-to-one support for its adult users, helping to develop their life skills and communication techniques.

There are two other NAS day centres in Gravesend: SAND in Princes Road and Artrack on the Milton Road Business Park, Milton Road.

Mark Lever, chief executive of NAS, said: “To have a facility like this so close to the town centre is brilliant.”

The centre will cater for 15 to 20 people, giving them the opportunity to take part in activities including dance, drama, living skills and photography.

Mr Holloway said: “If you don’t have friends or family who have autistic children, I don’t think you really have any idea just what kind of challenge it is.

When those autistic children become adults, they need a hell of a lot of support.”
