A swimming pool has reopened after it closed due to a chlorine spill.

Cascades Leisure Centre reopened at 10am this morning (Thursday) after the spillage of chlorine granules was discovered at 10pm on Tuesday.

Fire crews were called to the centre in Thong Lane, Gravesend at about 10.30pm on Tuesday after the spillage from a drum in a chemical storage room. Ambulance crews were put on standby but did not attend the incident.

A Kent Fire and Rescue spokeswoman said three fire engines and a support unit went to the centre.

She added: "The building was evacuated as a precaution.
"Crews in chemical suits removed the chemical and handed back to building management at about 1am with advice given to staff."

The leisure centre opens at 7am and closes at 10pm on weekdays.

A Gravesham council spokesman said: "The incident was in the pool plant room and involved a chemical reaction in the system.

"The fire and rescue service was called and the systems were shut down safely. The pool was empty at the time."

He added that the pool water had been replaced, the chemicals changed and checks and investigations carried out.
