Teen detained under the Mental Health Act following incident at Guru Nanak Darbar Gurdwara in Gravesend

A teenager accused of an attack at a gurdwara in which two people were injured has been sectioned.

The 17-year-old, who cannot be named for legal reasons, was due to appear in the youth court at Medway Magistrates' Court this morning (Thursday) after being charged with six offences in relation to an incident at the Sri Guru Nanak Darbar Gurdwara in Gravesend last Thursday night.

It was reported there was a disturbance inside the premises and that two women had received minor injuries following an assault outside the building. Nobody was seriously injured during the incident and police recovered a bladed weapon.

The teenager was arrested shortly afterwards and was later charged with assault occasioning actual bodily harm, attempted grievous bodily harm, using or threatening unlawful violence, threats to kill, threatening a person with a bladed weapon and possessing a bladed article in a public place.

However, magistrates heard the boy has been sectioned under the Mental Health Act and transferred to another part of the country.

As a result, his solicitor, Mel Stooks, was asking for the case to be adjourned for a week so doctors could carry out a preliminary mental health report on him in time for the next hearing.

Ms Stooks told the bench she expected the teenager to be in the hospital "for the foreseeable future" and asked if the next hearing could be heard in front of a District Judge when an initial mental health report would be presented to the court.

She also said a full mental health report would be carried out on the boy while he was being treated in the hospital as he was expected to remain there "for several months”.

His solicitor also asked magistrates to remand the boy into the care of the local authority accommodation team until the next hearing which they agreed to and they then adjourned the case until Thursday, July 25 when it will be heard at the same court.
