Teenage driver in horror crash

A TEENAGE driver was left hanging upside down trapped in the wreckage of his car after it came off a village road.

The incident took place in Redhill Road, New Ash Green, Gravesend.

The vehicle came off the road and through woodland before rolling upside down and crashing into a garden wall in neighbouring Westfield.

Nearby neighbours were awoken by an almighty crash last Thursday at about 11.20pm.

They found the young Fiesta driver, believed to be 17-years-old, trapped by the steering wheel, hanging upside down, with the back end of the car balanced on a six foot fence and the front of the car buried in the wall.

Neighbour Joe Byrne, 53, said: "I was in bed and I heard this noise as the car came through the trees, and then a very loud bang.

"He came off the road, through the trees, and the wall was totally demolished."

The teenager’s father, who it is thought was called to the scene, tried to climb into the wreckage to rescue his son.

Neighbour Phil McGilvary said: "The boy’s father was trying to get in the car. He was pretty frantic."

Mr McGilvary, 29, added: "There is a doctor who lives nearby and I manoeuvred the bush, so she could get to him. She talked and reassured him until the ambulance arrived."

Dartford firefighters also attended the scene with two crews stabilising the car before cutting off the door and freeing the injured driver.

The conscious teenager was taken to Darent Valley Hospital with multiple injuries.

The hospital confirmed he was later transferred to a specialist unit in East Grinstead for further treatment.

Tom Carlier, blue watch manager at Dartford fire station, said: "He was a very lucky lad."

The owner of the detached house was away with his wife visiting family at the time of the incident, and their son was house-sitting.

The homeowner, who did not want to be named, said: "It is very unfortunate for the young lad and we send our best wishes to him for a speedy recovery."
