A post was published on social media this morning by a concerned resident who claimed she had heard a rumour the popular venue in Windmill Street was due to be knocked down.

Others started commenting questioning the future of the building with many suggesting blocks of flats would be built in its place.

The theatre building, which opened in 1968, is owned by Gravesham council and is also home to its offices.

There are proposals to build a new Civic Centre and 500-seat theatre to replace the existing Woodville auditorium alongside community, retail, and leisure spaces and homes on land near St George’s Church and West Street.

The major regeneration project, known as St George’s Square, was due to be funded by cash from the Levelling Up Fund after the council was awarded £20 million from the government last year.

However, no timescale has been set and it is not known when or if the scheme will come to fruition.
