Cannabis-smoking thug sentenced at Medway Magistrates’ Court over violence at Gravesend house party

A party host and guests were seriously hurt when they were attacked by weed-smoking gatecrashers.

The trouble started when Arthur Jordan arrived at the get-together in Gravesend with a group of friends.

Host Shay Turley hadn’t invited them and when they started smoking cannabis, they were asked to leave by other party-goers.

But instead of going, Jordan and his friends turned violent.

One woman was repeatedly punched in the face and called a black c*** and a n*****, while Mr Turley was pushed into a corner and hit around the head.

Another young woman was punched in the face and knocked unconscious.

Jordan was later charged with racially aggravated common assault, assault occasioning actual bodily harm and two counts of assault by beating.

The 20-year-old originally denied the allegations but was found guilty at a trial in October, with sentencing adjourned for a pre-sentencing report to be carried out.

He returned to Medway Magistrates’ Court on December 30 to learn his fate.

Prosecutor Dylan Bradshaw told the bench how the incidents happened on November 5, 2022, when Jordan was just 17.

“They were smoking cannabis and were asked to leave, but they didn’t and then the host’s sister said to him ‘You f****** need to leave Shay’s house’,” he said.

“He laughed at her and told her to shut up and called her a black c*** and n*****.

“The woman replied ‘Do not call me that you racist p****’ and then he [and his friends] attacked the young woman.”

She was hit around the head at least two or three times and punched in the face by Jordan several times.

In a victim impact statement, she said she was shocked and angry about the attack, especially the racist comments made.

Mr Bradshaw added: “Mr Turley was also assaulted by another individual when he was pushed into a corner.”

Jordan punched him repeatedly while he was also being assaulted by someone else.

Another young woman was attacked when she too was pushed against a wall and punched in the left side of the face and knocked out.

The prosecutor added: “She can’t remember much as she woke up in the living room and her nose was bleeding and she had an injury to her left eye. She couldn’t see for a few weeks.”

After the violence ended, Mr Bradshaw said Jordan and his associates left but he came back and apologised to Mr Turley and his sister for the trouble.

Defending himself, Jordan said he was sorry for what had happened, adding: “I was young at the time, I was a 17-year-old and I was stupid.”

When it was pointed out to him that two of the victims were female, Jordan replied: “Yes, I know, there were others involved.”

He is now an apprentice, earning £340 a week and living with his mum and brother.

Magistrates told him he was lucky not to be going to prison and placed him on a 12-month community order.

This will involve him carrying out 240 hours of unpaid work, which would have been 150 hours but was increased because of the racial element of the offences.

He was also ordered to pay £450 compensation to the victims, plus a victim surcharge of £114 as well as £650 court costs.

He will pay what he owes at a rate of £100 per month.

Another man involved in the attacks was dealt with during a separate hearing.
