Gravesham council says the closure, which has been granted by Kent County Council, is to allow engineers to locate and repair a gas leak.

It warned drivers to expect delays and allow extra time for their journeys if visiting the town over the weekend.

The road had been sealed off by the side of The Civic Centre and The Woodville and opposite estate agents Orange.

But as of midday, one lane had reopened and diversions via Parrock Street and Parrock Road have been lifted.

The rest of the road is expected to be shut until Thursday, September 7.

No advance warning was given about the closure due to the nature of the repairs.

SGN has been contacted for more information about the work.
