The Terrace and Pelham Road South, in Gravesend, close to allow Southern Water repairs following burst mains

Motorists have complained of “traffic mayhem” as two roads in a town centre closed following burst water mains.

The Terrace, in Gravesend, which is part of the one-way system, was shut between Queen Street and Harmer Street due to a leak.

On Tuesday afternoon, teams from Southern Water, KCC Highways and construction company Clancy were at the scene.

Engineers were working to repair a leaking valve in one of the pipes.

A spokesperson for Southern Water said: “We hope to have completed the repairs by tomorrow (August 7). We apologise for any inconvenience caused.”

Diversion routes were in place, however, motorists said there was “traffic mayhem” earlier as drivers tried to navigate the closure.

Repairs have since been completed and The Terrace and one-way system through Gravesend has reopened (August 9).

Elsewhere in the town, Pelham Road South, near Perry Street, is still closed due to a burst mains.

The whole road is shut to allow for repairs and traffic will be diverted via Old Road West, Dover Road and Vale Road.
