A group of travellers has descended on playing fields next to a primary school.

Eight caravans arrived at land off Cedar Avenue, in King's Farm, Gravesend at 10pm last night.

Two more have arrived today and a local resident, who did not want to be named, said a council employee is currently cutting the grass around them.

She added: "It's a bit ironic really. They've moved on to council-owned land and it looks like the council has just sent someone to get the grass ready for them to sunbathe.

"Apparently they cut the chain on the gate to get in but the police say they can't do anything as it's council land."

The site is next to King's Farm Primary School. The school has been approached for comment.

Kent Police confirmed officers were called to the site last night and informed Gravesham council about the incursion.

Council officers are today talking to the group with a view of getting them to leave the site.

The grass cutting was part of Kent County Council's preplanned verge cutting.
