A soldier trained in weapons was having an affair when he blew up his pregnant wife's car containing her and her nine-year-old son, a court heard today.

Nicholas Fabian booby-trapped the car so that a grenade exploded as his wife Victoria drove away from their home in Vigo, near Gravesend, on March 5 last year, it was alleged.

Mrs Fabian, 32, suffered serious leg injuries, while her son Charlie and unborn child were unharmed.

Fabian denies attempting to murder Mrs Fabian, causing her grievous bodily harm with intent and causing an explosion likely to endanger life or cause serious damage to property.

He admits possessing 95 rounds of 5.56mm rifle bullets without a firearms certificate.

The trial continues.
