Of all those who gave their lives during the Second World War, none were as close to home as the Home Guard.

Now a plaque on display at Gravesend Library will ensure that local members of the guard will never be forgotten.

Mayor of Gravesham Cllr Mick Wenban was on hand as the Invicta Club presented the commemorative plaque to the library, which honours 24 men who died from 1940 to 1945.

It reads: “To the honour and glorious memory of the members of the 16th (Gravesend) Kent Home Guard who laid down their lives so that others might live in peace and security.”

The names listed on the plaque are G.J.J. Ashpole, W.T.V. Axcell, K.G. Barnes, D.J. Clifford, K. Curtis, L.C.R. Foxwell, J.D. Griffin, C.J. Hooker, E. Horne, R.G. Jones, L.E. King, J. Lawlor, C.W. Lihou, T.W. Main, C.F. Moxan, C.H. Rundle, H.W. Ward, D.G. Watson, W.B. Weir, R.N. Weller, R.W. White, L.S.A. Woods, E.W. Burt and N.T. Cooper.
