A 17-year-old girl died after walking across the railway line at a Kent train station.

Charlotte Sykes was electrocuted as she attempted to cross the track at Gravesend station - despite there being a footbridge a few yards away.

Tributes have been mounting up outside the station from friends and family, since Charlotte's tragic death on Friday.

British Transport Police said Miss Sykes, from Gravesend, had been on the London-bound platform with two friends at around 11.20pm.

It is not known whether she tripped over or stood on the live rail which has 750 volts flowing through it.

Crews from Thames-side Fire Station, in Coldharbour Road, Northfleet, were the first emergency services to attend the scene after they were flagged down by Charlotte's friend outside the station.

Charlotte, a former pupil at Blackfen School for Girls in Bexley, is believed to have recently moved to the area. Her former head of year, Mary Gough, led the tributes.

She said: "Charlotte was a popular, happy and well liked pupil. Charlotte will be greatly missed by the teachers who taught her and her many friends still at the school."
