Twelve in dock after asylum seekers' brawl

SEVEN men and five juveniles have appeared before a court charged with violent disorder in connection with a street fight which left four men with serious knife and machete wounds.

The alleged confrontation between groups of asylum seekers happened at the Canal Basin in Gravesend on the evening of January 15.

The following seven men were all remanded in custody until next Monday after Dartford magistrates refused their applications for bail:

Ali Mohammed Amin, 30, of Grosvenor Road, Birmingham; Rebwar Omar Rashid, 18, of Herman Terrace, Chatham; Hemem Gareb Nuri, 18, of Mount Pleasant Road, Birmingham; Shalin Rassal Hammad, 19, of Kings Cross, London; Ari Tofik Khalid, 18, of Paddington, London; Rahman Ali, 21, of South Hill Road, Gravesend and Mohammed Aziz, 26, of James Turner Street, Birmingham.

Three 17-year-old Gravesend youths and a 17-year-old Gillingham youth were also remanded in custody until next Monday.

A 16-year-old Gravesend youth was granted bail on condition he lives at a designated address in Gravesend, reports daily to Gravesend police station, observes a 7pm to 7am curfew and has no contact with any of his co-defendants or any prosecution witnesses.
