A visit by Leader of the House of Commons, Chris Grayling, to Gravesend on Saturday as part of the Vote Leave campaign has been cancelled.

He had been expected to join Gravesham MP Adam Holloway at the Sikh Gurdwara temple off Saddington Street at 2pm.

But this afternoon the trip was cancelled as a mark of respect, following the death of Labour MP Jo Cox, who died after being shot and stabbed.

The 41-year-old was attacked before holding a constituency surgery in Birstall, West Yorkshire on Thursday.

Last year the temple welcomed Prime Minister David Cameron and his wife, Samantha, during the Vaisakhi celebrations.

Mr Grayling is one of the political heavyweights, alongside former London mayor Boris Johnson and Lord Chancellor and Justice Secretary Michael Gove, backing the call to leave the European Union.

In an interview with the Financial Times, Mr Grayling said an exit would be complete “by the end of 2019”, but that Britain should limit the role of EU judges in British law and legislate to restrict free movement of EU citizens before that date.

Votes will be cast at the ballot box next Thursday.
