Developers have revealed ambitious plans to build waterfront homes on an industrial site on the riverside in Gravesend .
Joseph Homes says the regeneration plans will revitalise and transform the area which has been sitting “neglected” with almost two thirds of the site dedicated as open space.
The “residential-led” development between the Thames and the canal basin off Canal Road has been earmarked for homes but the final number has not been confirmed.
Developers say the project will also create some 400 jobs – plus construction employment – and will feature commercial and retail space throughout the site.
This would be made up of offices, shops and cafes, according to documents published by the developers online.
The project has been described as having “huge potential to transform” the former industrial area with 350m of new riverside pathways, 60% green space and incorporating the canal into the designs.
A wide range of new public realm spaces will also be worked in to the design, which developers say they are keen to work with the community on shaping.
Documents published ahead of an online presentation being delivered this evening say: “An industrial look and feel will influence the vision and complement the site’s setting and history, as will the use of appropriate materials, textures and colours.
“The preservation of historic fixtures, fittings, machinery, details and lock gates will enrich apartment buildings allowing them to sit comfortably within their setting.”
Plans were approved in 2002 and 2014 with the latter application granted permission for 650 homes after demolishing warehouses and units off Canal Road.
