There were long delays for motorists this morning as traffic built up on the A2 London-bound.

Speed limits were brought down to 40mph and traffic came to a standstill between the Cobham / Shorne / Inn On The Lake turn-off and the A2260 Southfleet Road / B262 Northfleet / Ebbsfleet turn-off.

It meant the A226 into Gravesend was also extremely busy as drivers tried to find alternative routes.

The traffic was reported to be returning to normal by 9am.

There was further delays for those travelling from Medway when a white BMW hit the central banking between the Chatham and Strood junctions of the M2. Traffic was queued back almost to Gillingham.
