An investigation is underway following the death of a woman in a house fire on New Year's Day.

Firefighters were called to Highview in Vigo just before 7.05pm to reports of black smoke issuing from a bedroom window.

Initial reports said an occupant and a dog had been rescued from the property, but Kent Fire and Rescue has since confirmed the female occupant has sadly died.

Crews wearing breathing apparatus tackled the flames with a main jet and a high-pressure hose reel jet.

The fire is believed to have started in the bedroom but the exact cause is not yet established.
