A woman who received a maggot-infested cheeseburger from McDonald’s has been left disgusted at the fast-food chain’s lack of concern.
Dolly Barnes ordered her meal through Just Eat and was left feeling sick after peeling open her bun and seeing the critters crawling across her lunch.
The 22-year-old had bought the food from the New Road McDonald’s in Gravesend and was lucky enough to notice the infestation as she checked to see if the restaurant had made her burger plain as she’d requested.
Also from Gravesend, Dolly said: “I find it absolutely disgusting! I felt sick after seeing it.
“I ordered a plain cheeseburger – so I opened it to make sure it was plain – that’s when I saw all those little white bits.
“I took a picture and posted it on Facebook and asked anyone if they knew what it was and that’s when it was confirmed to me that it was fly eggs and maggots.”
Dolly called the town centre McDonald’s but was told by staff to contact Just Eat.
The franchisee said they didn’t receive a call from the customer until 9.30pm, eight hours after the food was served.
Despite numerous emails to the delivery service, she has not heard back from the customer service team since she bought her meal at around 1.30pm on Wednesday, August 16.
She said: “I’ve not gotten any responses at all. I want something done about it and I want my money back, or something like that.”
Dolly kept hold of the burger and after contacting the environmental health department at the council she was asked to take it to them.
The burger is now teeming with maggots.
A McDonald’s spokesperson said: “Food safety is of the utmost importance to us and we place great emphasis on quality control, following rigorous standards to avoid any imperfections.
“As soon as the team were made aware, a restaurant-level investigation was conducted, but have found no evidence to suggest this issue originated in the restaurant.
“We understand the customer has reached out to our Customer Services Team who will be able to support them further.”
Dolly has now received vouchers from McDonald’s as a result of her complaint. However, she vows never to eat there again.
