A dog owner has been left traumatised after her pet dog was mauled to death by a rottweiler in the middle of a busy town centre.
Karen Snell was venturing into Gravesend town centre last night with her sister, Lorraine Colclough and her two dogs - Skippy, a Jack Russell and Teddy, a chihuahua.
Each of the dogs were on leads as the pair walked up Windmill street but as they turned into the high street, on the corner of the Natwest bank, the dogs were confronted by two rottweilers.
"I screamed and was just shocked to see these two big rottweilers coming for the dogs," said Karen.
"I was so scared I ran into the McDonalds to get away. I couldn't do anything for poor Teddy, he picked him up and that was it."
One of the two men meant to be looking after the dogs had one of the rottweilers on a lead but the other was running free, she explained.
Her sister managed to quickly scoop up Skippy into her arms but the unmuzzled rottweiler went straight for Teddy.
She said the second man then broke off a branch of the tree and started hitting the dog to get him to release the tiny chihuahua.
"He came into the shop and said your dog is dead... that was it, no apology" - Karen Snell
"He came into the shop and said your dog is dead. That was it. No apology."
Karen's sister, Lorraine contacted the police who called round to visit and take descriptions of the two men involved.
She says her sister has been left traumatised and is desperate to bring the men responsible to justice.
"It was horrendous to witness. My sister is devastated - these dogs are her life."
Police confirmed they were called at 7.40pm.
"Officers attended the scene and enquiries to establish the full circumstances are ongoing," said a spokesman.
