Billy Bricknell has left Ebbsfleet United.

The 26-year-old striker scored 31 goals in 80 appearances for the Fleet but the recent arrival of new signings saw him drop down the pecking-order at the PHB Stadium.

Bricknell spoke with manager Jamie Day this week and his contract was terminated by mutual consent.

He said: "It’s quite gutting because I didn’t want to leave the club.

"I’ve been playing in that league (Conference South) for years, scoring goals and so to be told that I might be sat in the stand – I didn’t want to hear that.

"Jamie and I left on good terms. I understand his situation, he’s got money to spend, and that’s fine.

"But for me, I’m 26 and I need to play football. I can’t train three times a week and then not play on a Saturday or not even be involved.

"But it was still a very hard decision."

Ebbsfleet vice-chairman Peter Varney said: "Billy has been an integral part of the squad here for the past 18 months and has been a model player on and off the pitch and we wish him every success in his future career.

"I am aware Billy has interest from a number of clubs."

Bricknell scored two goals in his final appearance for Ebbsfleet, helping them to a 3-1 win away to Vanarama Conference South leaders Boreham Wood.

He watched Saturday's FA Trophy win over Forest Green from the stand.
