Steve Brown this week described his "burning ambition" to be a successful manager after Ebbsfleet’s new owners appointed him as the man to lead the club into a new era.

Since injury forced Brown to call time on his playing career in 2005, the former Charlton defender has waited patiently for his first job in management.

Brown was overlooked for the role when Nicky Forster left Dover in January, so he is now itching to get started at Stonebridge Road.

He said: "When you finish your career and go into coaching, the burning ambition is to be a manager but it doesn’t always materialise that way.

"I’ve spent the last 10 years obtaining the badges and coaching in various roles and I’ve always wanted a crack at management. This has given me the opportunity to do that.

"I’ve enjoyed every role I’ve had and this was the natural next step for me. It’s a great feeling and can’t wait to get started."

Brown, who served as Forster's assistant at Dover, saw Chris Kinnear and Jake Leberl brought in to replace the 39-year-old while he was retitled first-team coach.

He said: "First and foremost, I was disappointed that Nicky got asked to leave when we were third in the league. I thought it was a work in progress.

"I didn’t get that opportunity (to be manager) and that was fine, it was the chairman’s choice. It wasn’t so much a disappointment but the rest of my time at Dover wasn’t that enjoyable once the change had been made."
