Summer signing Charlie Sheringham was delighted to cap his Ebbsfleet United debut with a winning goal on Tuesday night.

Sheringham, who netted six times in as many games during pre-season, found the net again as the Fleet beat Concord 2-0 in Vanarama Conference South.

He had a quiet game – but popped up when it mattered.

Sheringham said: "I didn’t get much ball in the first half but that was because of Concord harassing us. We didn’t keep the ball as well as we should have done.

"But we would have taken that at the start of the day; 2-0 and an ugly performance. We kept a clean sheet and we did create a few things, but we need to be a bit more organised, a bit sharper and a bit more intelligent with our play all over the pitch."

Sheringham’s father, Teddy, watched on from the directors’ box as he scored from close range to ensure Ebbsfleet started their league campaign with a win.

He said: "Matty Godden gave a great little lay-off for me, right into my path, and all I had to do was finish it off.

"Matty’s a good striker and I will be setting him up on numerous occasions. I feel like we’ve got a good understanding.

"We’ll look for each other, we’re not going to be greedy if the other one’s in a better position.”

Sheringham added: "We didn’t play on Saturday and we probably looked like we were behind schedule. We weren’t quite on it but the lads really dug in and got a great result.

"We want to be at the top of the league and it already feels like we’re chasing. It’s a bit unfortunate to have Salisbury first game and for them to be expelled from the league, but it’s one of those things you’ve got to deal with.

"The only way we can do that is by winning our games as soon as they come."
