Fleet boss Daryl McMahon felt his team could have scored more than the six goals they bagged against East Thurrock on Saturday.

The Fleet moved two points clear at the top of National League South following their 6-1 success after rivals Maidenhead could only draw.

“It was a good performance and we scored some terrific goals,” said McMahon. “It would be nice to do that every week but it’s not realistic.

“We performed well and we could have scored more. We’ve got to keep creating the chances we have been creating.

“We’ve done it quite regularly all season, we’re dangerous from set pieces and we have got a goal threat in us right across the team.

“We missed too many chances but I can’t really complain when we scored six.”

Fleet are the division’s top scorers with 68 goals in 32 games.

Goal difference could prove crucial come the end of the season but McMahon said that it’s the demands of the players – not the title race – that creates pressure.

“They put themselves under pressure to score goals and create chances,” added the Fleet boss. “That’s what we do.

“We want to excel and do well, if we have missed chances then the players do feel it.

“I don’t think I have to motivate the players. If I have to, then they shouldn’t really be here. Players should be able to motivate themselves.

“We’ve obviously got a plan of how we’re playing and what we’re doing and that’s my job and we’ve done it for 18 months since I’ve been here and we’ll continue to do that. At the minute, the players are performing really, really well.”

Maidenhead could reclaim top spot on Monday night if they win at play-off hopefuls Chelmsford.

McMahon could yet pay a visit to watch their rivals in action and said: “It’s not far from my house. I live about 15 minutes from Chelmsford ground but I’ve not decided yet, I might pop along and see it.”
