Ebbsfleet 6 East Thurrock 1 match report
Published: 16:52, 04 March 2017
Two goals apiece from Anthony Cook and Andy Drury fired Ebbsfleet to a comfortable home win in National League South on Saturday.
Late goals from Jack Powell and substitute Darren McQueen completed the tally as Fleet came from behind.
The Fleet moved two points clear at the top after Maidenhead were held to a goalless draw by Hampton & Richmond.
The Fleet were forced to make one change as Jack Powell came in for the suspended Dean Rance.
And there was a further reshuffle for Daryl McMahon's men within seven minutes when centre-back Dave Winfield went down injured and was replaced by Mark Phillips.
The visitors, despite their five-man backline, know only one way to play and attack seemed the best form of defence when they took a 10th-minute lead.
Jack Connors needlessly bundled over Femi Akinwande in the box and Reece Harris sent Fleet keeper Nathan Ashmore the wrong way from the spot.
Fleet's response was emphatic. The chances continued to flow as Danny Kedwell, Sam Deering and Bradley Bubb all went close.
The equaliser was coming and it arrived on 27 minutes when Bubb bundled his way through three challenges and his cross-shot fell perfectly for Cook to convert at close range.
Fleet went ahead on 36 minutes when Powell's deep corner was headed home by Drury.
Bubb then fired wide of the far post after a neat exchange with Cook in the box and, with confidence flowing throughout the hosts, a third goal arrived two minutes before the break.
There appeared little danger as the ball fell for Cook 35 yards from goal but, spotting the keeper off his line, the Fleet midfielder curled a stunning first-time right-foot effort into the far corner.
East Thurrock looked a better side when they reverted to four at the back in the second half but, by then, the game was beyond them.
Deering was somehow denied at close range by the keeper before Cook missed out on a hat-trick when his low shot found the side netting.
The fourth goal arrived on 66 minutes when Drury showed neat footwork in the box to make himself some space before finishing with ease.
McMahon introduced the fresh legs of Darren McQueen up front and he twice went close soon after coming on.
The fifth arrived eight minutes from time when Kedwell's perfect pass sent Powell away and he tucked his shot past the keeper.
There was still time for Fleet to claim a sixth goal when substitute McQueen made space on the edge of the box and fired low for his first goal of 2017.
