Daryl McMahon has left Ebbsfleet United on a free transfer to sign for Boreham Wood.
The 31-year-old has signed a long-term contract with Wood which takes him up to the end of the 2016-17 season.
Boreham Wood are top of Vanarama Conference South, seven places and 13 points ahead of Ebbsfleet.
Vice-chairman Peter Varney told the club's website: "Daryl is leaving us as a player but he will remain as our academy manager and has a key role going forward in developing our academy and the talented young players in it.
"At 31 years of age, the contract offered by Boreham Wood offers Daryl and his family security going forward and he goes with the best wishes of everyone at the club.
"Although I will still work closely with him in relation to the academy, I would like to thank him for all his efforts over the past 18 months and particularly for taking charge of the team earlier in the season in the period following the departure of Steve Brown and the appointment of Jamie Day."
McMahon was Brown's first signing as Fleet manager, joining from Kent rivals Dover for £13,000. He scored 19 goals in 84 appearances for the north Kent club.
Brown handed McMahon the captaincy midway through last season and the midfielder was appointed caretaker manager when Brown was sacked in November. He guided the Fleet to two wins and draw before handing over the reigns to incoming boss Jamie Day.
McMahon said: "I would like to thank the fans and team-mates for their support for me as captain and whilst in the caretaker role.
"I’d also like to thank Peter Varney and the board for their continued support in developing our academy which I am extremely excited about.
"I wish the new management team and squad all the best for the rest of the season."
McMahon is not the first Fleet player to have signed for one of their promotion rivals. Ben May and Anthony Cook both made their Bromley debuts on Saturday after their contracts were cancelled last week.
Ebbsfleet still have to play Bromley at home on February 17 and away on March 7 before Boreham Wood visit the PHB Stadium on April 11.
