Kent's Jake Hill enjoyed another podium finish as the British Touring Car Championship continued at Brands Hatch on Sunday.

The Platt's Heath charger, a winner at Donington last month, took second place in the final race for West Surrey Racing ROKiT MB Motorsport after an action-packed day which included a trip to the gravel in race one and a spin in race two.

“It's great to be on the podium in the final race,” said Hill. “My ROKiT MB Motorsport BMW was fantastic in the last race.

"We've been quick all day and I'm glad that race was mistake-free this time.

"I learnt my lesson and we've come home with a podium and a decent haul of points today and that will propel us forward to Thruxton later in the month.”

In comparison to the sweltering conditions seen in Saturday's qualifying session, when Hill was second-fastest, the heavens opened just minutes before the start of Sunday's first race.

The majority of runners opted to start on wet tyres and, launching from the front row, Hill entered the first corner side-by-side with WSR team-mate Colin Turkington.

As the race wore on, tyre management became the main focus as those on wet tyres began to toil with the racing line drying.

A small error from Hill at Clearways allowed the Honda of Josh Cook to sneak through before a trip through the gravel relegated the Brit to fourth behind Cook, Tom Ingram and Dan Cammish of Wrotham-based Motorbase NAPA Racing.

Defending champion Ash Sutton was ninth for NAPA Racing.

A lightning start from fourth in race two saw Hill up to second before even reaching Paddock Hill Bend, which placed him on the rear bumper of Cook.

Locked in battle, Hill ramped up on the pressure on the Honda, maintaining a gap of around three tenths, with Cammish also honing in. But too much kerb at Druids with two laps to go sent Hill into a spin - dropping him down the order to seventh. Cook claimed his second win of the day just 0.2sec ahead of Cammish and Rory Butcher with Sutton fourth.

Lining up sixth for the final race, a sensational getaway allowed Hill to surge past Daniel Lloyd and George Gamble before the first corner and a number of decisive moves, including around the outside of Tom Chilton and Bobby Thompson, soon brought him up to second place.

Bunched back together following a late safety car, Hill followed Turkington line astern to the finish to record his 20th career BTCC podium. Thompson completed the top three with Sutton sixth and Cammish 10th. Motorbase's two other drivers, Ollie Jackson and Sam Osborne, struggled with only Jackson scoring points with 14th in race two and 12th in race three.

Hill sits fourth in the championship on 69 points while ROKiT MB Motorsport are seventh in the team standings.

Fellow Kent driver Michael Crees failed to compete in all three races after a race-two incident did too much damage to his roll-cage.

The Broadstairs racer qualified his Vauxhall Astra 17th for race one - sixth in the independents' class - and broke into the top 12 after a stunning first lap.

With seven laps to go he was knocking on the door of the top 10 but had to settle for 12th - fourth in the independent trophy battle.

Aiming for more in round five, Crees launched well off the line but a tangle in the pack forced him off the track on the run towards Paddock Hill Bend.

Dropping to 17th, Crees limped on with his damaged car before pitting at the end of lap eight where he retired. Although suffering from a sore neck, he was otherwise unharmed but the damage to the roll-cage could not be fixed ending his weekend early.

“I’m absolutely gutted for the weekend to have finished how it did after such a strong start," he said.

"But it’s great to know the car has real pace and I can’t wait now to jump back in at Thruxton in a couple of weeks.

"I have to say a huge thank-you to everyone for all of the amazing support I received across the weekend, it’s always fantastic racing on home ground at Brands but it truly was overwhelming to have as many guests there and to have as much support as we did.”

The championship resumes at Thruxton on May 28-29.
