Ebbsfleet boss Dennis Kutrieb has urged his table-toppers to stay on the front foot.
The Fleet overcame Farnborough 4-2 on Saturday to remain top of National League South with a 100 per cent record after four games.
But they made hard work of it after establishing a 3-1 lead on the hour mark, the visitors pulling one back with 20 minutes left to make for a nervy finale.
“I think you could see especially after going 3-1 up, if we don’t put our foot on the pedal we start to struggle,” said Kutrieb.
“We need to be on the front foot, we need to attack, we need to drive the ball and make sure we don’t make easy mistakes and concede easy goals and then we will be fine.
“Going forward we will always create chances to score goals, that’s what we’ve done the first three games and we did it better on Saturday with four goals, that’s outstanding and the quality is there.
“But we need to make sure that we defend as a team properly enough that we don’t concede goals.”
The Fleet contributed to both goals that they conceded against Farnborough.
One square ball on halfway was intercepted for the first goal, the second effort coming after they failed to clear on the edge of their own penalty area.
“For me, it doesn’t matter if it’s a shot outside the box or a transition, it’s just too easy,” added the Fleet boss.
“We need to make sure it's not happening, it was an easy mistake from us in a dangerous area. You can’t lose the ball there, if you lose it there in our league then you get punished.
“Even in the first half they had good positions after one or two transitions and we needed our goalkeeper. We will get better because we’ll put our focus on it.”
Fleet’s focus will come through analysis and on the training ground.
It’s an area that Kutrieb wants to brush up on now.
“It's a little bit of everything,” he said. “We will definitely see some clips as a team where we need to do better.
“If it’s a big individual mistake then you don’t need to show the videos and work on it on the pitch but if you do something as a team that you could have done better then it’s always good to show a video because then they can see how it happened.
“Then we’ll go through it on the pitch, and sometimes we’ll focus on it all week, sometimes just a day or two days, it depends how much time we have between games and how important it is for us.
“In general, it’s always a case of watching the videos and analysing together with the boys, go on the pitch and work on it.”
On the game itself against a Farnborough team that had conceded just twice in their first three matches, Kutrieb added: “It was a tough game, we dominated them in the first half but they had good chances. We needed to score in the first 10 minutes when we were so dominant. I liked the way we played, especially in the first half.
“We needed to put the game to bed and score a fourth goal. We’re not where I want to have us but we’re on a good way and we scored another four goals. They haven’t conceded much before so they are a good team and can defend.
“They know what to do at the back, it’s not by chance that they haven’t conceded many goals in the first three games. I liked that we could open them up and score goals.
“We need to defend better if we want to be in the mix and win our games. I’m pretty confident we will be fine but there’s still a few situations where we need to defend better. There’s still work to do.”
