Ebbsfleet United forward Aaron McLean on his new role as striker coach

Player-coach Aaron McLean wants Ebbsfleet’s strikers to start pulling the trigger with both feet.

McLean, who joined Daryl McMahon’s staff earlier this season, has been tasked with getting the best out of his fellow centre-forwards.

And you’d be a fool not to take advice from a man who rose from non-league to the Premier League in six years.

McLean said: "Don’t stop working on the things you’re not good at – that’s what I was always taught.

"It was always massive that I worked on my left foot and made sure that when an opportunity came, I was happy to take it left foot or right.

"In the last few games, we’ve had opportunities where we’ve not been comfortable shooting with our weaker foot and the opportunity’s gone.

"That’s a massive thing I’m trying to get into the lads. I’d rather they have a go with their weak foot."

McLean, who came off the bench at Macclesfield on Saturday, says the transition from player to coach is proving easy thanks to the staff already in place.

He’s seeing games through different eyes now, although some principles at this level will never change.

McLean said: "It’s about hard work and being physically strong. You have to make sure that if you’re not scoring, you’re always involved in the game.

"Look at the way Keds (Danny Kedwell) plays. Even when he doesn’t score, he’s constantly working, whether it’s defensively or attacking-wise.

"It’s making sure they get that work ethic and if they do that, their quality comes out anyway."
