Ebbsfleet United striker Aaron McLean insists they can't rely on their 12-point lead and must keep winning games

Aaron McLean insists title-chasing Ebbsfleet can’t relax just because they’re 12 points clear at the top of the table.

McLean’s goals since joining the club last month have helped Fleet take control in National League South.

But Sutton and Maidstone both have two games in hand and the former Peterborough striker doesn’t want to give the chasing pack a sniff of hope.

McLean said: "This is the business end of the season. What we’ve done up until now means nothing if we don’t kick on from here. This part of the season is about winning games.

"We’ve given ourselves a cushion but we can’t rely on that.

"Each game we win makes it harder for the teams chasing us and they’ll get disheartened. We need to make sure we do our job and if we do, it doesn’t matter what anyone else does."

McLean has certainly hit the ground running in Ebbsfleet red.

He came off the bench to score the winner at Basingstoke, netted both goals in a 2-1 success at Bishop’s Stortford and struck again at Oxford City on Saturday.

That game finished 1-1 but McLean’s midweek strike against St Albans proved to be the winner.

He said: "I always back myself that if I get opportunities I’ll score goals and I’m at a club that will create opportunities for me.

"I should have had a few more if I’m being honest.

"As long as I keep working hard, keep scoring goals for the team and we keep winning games, I’m happy."
