The Gravesend Gremlins Ladies Rugby Team were unable to complete their first season because of coronavirus but it didn’t stop them celebrating.

Their first friendly season got underway in September and was meant to finish this month, but the Covid-19 crisis meant play was stopped in March, with the team boasting four wins from the seven games they played.

The Gremlins were formed in January and they held their first awards night over Zoom.

Team member Fran Holmes said: “Although it wasn’t quite the same with each ‘attendee’ being in their own homes, everyone made an effort to look their best and set themselves up with snacks and drinks to last the evening.”

Head coach Miles Tempan and forwards coach Joe Fathers both spoke before the awards were handed out.

With only nine awards up for grabs and 30 players on the books it was always going to be difficult to decide a winner for each category.

Sian Hamilton claimed the players’ player award while the team player award went to Chloe Blackall. The ‘Seemed Like a Good Idea at the Time Award’ also went to Blackall.

Most improved player was Amy Gore, the coaches’ award from training went to Kat Painter. She was also named captain’s player of the year.

The award for going above and beyond was for Lucy Sparks. Becki Curtis took the Theobald Award for spirit of rugby, the try evader award was taken by Gina Peterson

Holmes added: “Although nobody knows when the season will be able to start up again, or what it will look like when it does, everybody knows that the Gremlins will be ready to get back out there and put themselves in contention for next year’s awards!”
