New Ebbsfleet boss Harry Watling wants his team to enjoy their first win of the season by spending their day off watching Netflix.

After three games in the week ended with the Fleet claiming a first victory in 13 matches - a run stretching back into last season - Watling wants the players to recharge their batteries.

“I’m really happy with where the squad is,” said Watling, following the 1-0 National League win at home to Hartlepool.

“I’ve told them I want them to put their feet up tomorrow and get through at least one Netflix boxset so there’s no running around the house or anything like that.

“Just get rested and come back in Monday morning ready to go. Feet up, cotton wool and see you Monday morning.”

It was a game of few chances against Hartlepool but Watling was delighted that the response he got from the group in two training sessions was replicated on matchday.

“The game wasn’t played a lot in both boxes but the one chance that fell to us, we took, and the one that fell to them, they didn’t,” reflected the Fleet boss.

“I have to say I thought our shape and structure from the guys out on the pitch was outstanding. I changed shape during the game three times and they took it on board really quickly, they were fabulous. It’s about the response of the players.

“Work ethic, open-mindedness, I’ve seen everything that you would hope for from a group buying in, but you’ve got to back it up and they did that massively.

“You could come in, they can train really well and then the product out on the pitch might not be as good. But they backed it up and they were fabulous.

“The big thing is we’ve kept a clean sheet so that’s two on the spin this week so I’m super pleased with that.

“It wasn’t the plan to drop that deep (in the second half) and let Hartlepool have that much of the ball because it’s our stadium and we want to dictate things.

“They changed shape a few times and so did we, I learnt from that in terms of what my players can take on. We were patched up, we had a lot of key players missing so that’s a real team performance.”

On matchwinner Rakish Bingham, Watling added: “He’s a wonderful football player. I’m here to get the best out of him, that’s my job.

“I think everybody stood still when he picked it up because they were petrified of his ability to twist and turn. For a big guy, he’s got wonderful feet.

“If it goes in off your shinpad or we bend one in the top corner from 25 yards, it all counts for one.”

Watling also praised the work of the man he’s replaced in the dugout, Danny Searle.

Searle guided the Fleet to safety after taking over from Dennis Kutrieb last season but failed to win a match this season.

“It’s important to say football is a lot of luck, a lot of fine margins,” said Watling.

“I know the work that went on before I got here, and I know it was good work so let’s get that straight.

“Danny Searle is a good man so the work going on would have been meticulous but sometimes the ball doesn’t bounce for you, I’ve been there myself.

“I’m not going to look at the league table until March, I just want to collate as many points as possible and be really grounded, level and steady.”
