Gravesham Tennis Club reopened its doors to members in glorious sunshine as outdoor sports resumed across England this week.

Like other sports facilities, the club - based within the grounds of Gravesend Rugby Club off Milton Road - was suspended on January 4 as part of the national lockdown.

Over three months later, members were excited to get back on court as soon as they were able to when it reopened on Monday morning for singles, doubles and coaching.

The tennis club, which is marking its 40th anniversary this year, has had a busy time during lockdown. It managed to secure a grant from Sport England and ran a successful crowdfunding campaign to raise £10,000 to pay for improvements to club facilities.

Rob Powell, committee member at the club, said: "Members have been itching to get back on court and we were lucky to have had a beautiful, sunny morning (on Monday) to welcome them back.

"As a naturally socially-distanced sport, tennis is especially attractive right now and we're looking forward to welcoming new players to the club who want to try out something new."

The club is offering people the chance to join for April at a special price of £20 to see if they enjoy it in attempt to entice new members. More information can be found here.

The conclusion of the outdoor sport hiatus is a welcome boost for many as opportunities to play golf, return to grassroots football, and just participate in most sports have resurfaced.
