Paul Lorraine has revealed some of his Ebbsfleet team-mates considered quitting football during the dark days of last season.

The defender had to take out a loan to cover his mortgage when the Fleet players weren’t paid their wages on time.

But Lorraine's love for the club meant that when Kuwaiti owners took over at Stonebridge Road and appointed a new manager this week, he jumped at the chance to stay on.

He said: "I've been through the tough times. When the new management came in, I'd have been silly to walk away because these could be exciting times for the club.

"The end of last season was one of the toughest times I've had in football. My wife said I was a nightmare to live with and some of the other players were thinking of giving up football. It was that grim – the enjoyment had gone.

"It's a fresh start, so to speak. Being at the same club, it's hard to explain but it's a new challenge and I'm looking forward to it."
