Daryl McMahon saw complacency creep into Ebbsfleet's play on Tuesday night.
They led Weston-super-Mare 2-0 at Stonebridge Road but allowed the bottom side in Vanarama National League South to get back into the game.
It finished 2-1 and although Fleet moved nine points clear at the top, McMahon wasn't entirely happy.
He said: "We made hard work of it, rather than them making it hard for us.
"I don’t know how many chances we had and how many saves their goalkeeper made but we should have been out of sight.
"It’s not a good goal to concede from our point of view and then it’s a cagey last 15 minutes because anything into the box, a corner or a free-kick, you’re susceptible.
"I thought we should have killed the game off. We didn’t manage it well in the second half."
Danny Kedwell's goal had Fleet ahead at the break and captain Tom Bonner scored his first goal for the club four minutes into the second half.
McMahon said: "I still thought we had another gear to go. I thought we were very good in the first half, we created chances and we dominated the ball but I thought we had another gear.
"I thought we managed the start of the second half really well, got another goal and then we got a little bit complacent to be honest.
"That will happen from time to time. With the start we’ve had, 10 wins and a draw in the first 11 games is an unbelievable start and there are going to be little dips in games and in the season. We’ve got to manage it a little bit better."
Kedwell had gone six games without scoring but the former Gills striker has been a pivotal figure in Ebbsfleet's 11-match unbeaten run and more than deserved his goal on Tuesday.
McMahon said: "Keds has been outstanding so far this season and he was again on Tuesday night.
"He hasn’t got the goals his performances deserve so I’m delighted he scored - especially as his goal against these was chalked off last time (when the match was abandoned)."
