Concord Rangers 0 Ebbsfleet United 1 match report

Ebbsfleet made it two wins from two in National League South on Tuesday when they saw off Concord Rangers in Essex.

Dave Winfield's first goal for the club proved to be the winner although Fleet lost Danny Kedwell to injury midway through the second half.

Kedwell joins fellow strikers Aaron McLean, Bradley Bubb and Charlie Sheringham in the treatment room.

Fleet came into the game on the back of a 4-0 win against Poole on the opening day although manager Daryl McMahon made three changes at the Aspect Arena.

Matt Fish replaced Reiss Greenidge as the visitors switched to a back-four, while John-Paul Kissock and Anthony Cook came in for Jordan Parkes and Darren McQueen.

On-loan Maidstone striker Alex Akrofi started for Concord although Mark Onyemah, who spent much of last season playing for Dartford, had to settle for a place on the bench.

Jack Powell lined up as the deepest of Fleet's midfielders, with Kissock and Dean Rance closer to lone striker Kedwell, who was flanked by Sean Shields on the right and Cook on the left.

Fleet started on the front foot and Shields flashed a low shot across the face of goal although Concord keeper Ben McNamaaa wasn't tested in the early stages.

Shields was involved in the visitors' next move of note, running onto a fine Matt Fish pass and cutting the ball back into the six-yard box. Rob Girdlestone was alive to the danger, however, and stabbed the ball behind for a corner.

Powell took it deep to Kedwell, whose header back across goal was spilled by McNamara but not at the feet of an attacker in red.

Concord were just starting to assert themselves when Ebbsfleet found a goal from an unlikely source in the 31st minute. Kedwell chested down a cross for centre-half Winfield, who turned and stroked the ball into the bottom corner with his left foot.

Fleet had their tails up now and Cook skipped away from two players down the Fleet left before being taken out by Jay Dowie. The midfielder saw yellow and was lucky to stay on the pitch just a minute later when he sent Rance crashing to the turf.

Concord had a good chance to equalise seven minutes after the interval. Fish lost possession and James White crossed for Akrofi, who glanced a header wide of the far post when he should have hit the target.

The visitors didn't seem to heed the warning and Nathan Ashmore had to pluck a curling Joao Carlos effort out of the top corner as Concord sensed there might be a way back into the game.

Cook then made ground down the Fleet left and laid on a great chance for Powell. But his first shot was scuffed and the second failed to beat McNamara.

Kedwell connected with a corner from the right and was caught late as he got his shot away. The captain picked himself up initially but then went down again and it was soon clear he couldn't carry on.

McQueen entered the fray as Kedwell hobbled down the touchline.

Goalkeeper Nathan Ashmore did well to keep a Steve Cawley free-kick out of the top corner when Winfield was penalised 25 yards from his own goal.

Seven minutes from time, Ebbsfleet almost doubled their lead. A pass of real quality from Powell found substitute Sam Deering and after cutting back onto his left foot, the little man curled a shot squarely against the far post with McNamara beaten.

Fleet hearts were in mouths late on when Winfield tangled with Akrofi in the box and referee Chris Pollard blew his whistle. But the man in black decided the Stones man had dived and pulled out his yellow card, awarding a free-kick to the visitors.

Concord thought they'd snatched a point on the stroke of 90 minutes but White's powerful shot, which seemed destined for the bottom corner, was blocked on the line by Kissock.
