Substitute Anthony Cook inspired 10-man Ebbsfleet to a dramatic extra-time FA Trophy win at Welling on Tuesday night.
Cook, who was substituted during Saturday’s defeat to Weston, came off the bench to score the equaliser for Fleet who came back from 2-0 down at half-time and went on to set up a tie with Forest Green after Matt Godden’s late winner.
Former Welling boss Jamie Day took charge of the Fleet against his old club for the first time while Loui Fazakerley was in the Wings dugout after caretaker boss Jamie Turner left to join Ebbsfleet on Monday.
The Fleet settled quickest and Godden fired against the post in the seventh minute before Matt Johnson put the rebound wide.
Welling went ahead with virtually their first effort of note. A long Chris Bush free-kick saw ex-Wings defender Anthony Acheampong needlessly pull Aristide Bassele’s shirt and Kieron St.Aimie tucked away the spot-kick.
Fleet lost Dean Rance to injury although it needed a goalline clearance from Zach Fagan to deny Godden an immediate equaliser.
Welling doubled their lead in stoppage time at the end of the first half when a free-flowing move saw Tyrone Marsh fire low beyond keeper Brandon Hall in his final appearance for the Wings.
Ebbsfleet pulled one back seven minutes into the second half when Alex Osborn crossed for Brendan Kiernan to slot home, with the hosts waiting for an offside flag that never came.
Chances were few and far between although the Fleet had plenty of possession. They finally drew level eight minutes from time when a corner was only half-cleared and Cook fired in through a crowded penalty area.
The Fleet nearly won it in stoppage time but Cook headed over the bar.
Welling responded positively in extra-time and had two glorious openings as Marsh’s volley was saved and Jamal Fyfield failed to convert from close range.
Acheampong collected a second yellow card for upending Bassele but the Fleet snatched a late winner when a right-wing cross was turned in at the far post by Godden.
Ebbsfleet will host Forest Green, managed by former Fleet assistant boss Adrian Pennock, on Saturday, January 10.
