HARRY DHAMI: "I want to make myself the mandatory challenger..."

KENT boxer Marry Dhami believes winning the British welterweight title is his destiny after he made a victorious return to the ring.

In his first outing for almost two years, Dhami outclassed Central Area welterweight champion Lee Armstrong to win a unanimous points verdict at the St Andrews Sports Club, Glasgow.

And now he has his sights on becoming mandatory challenger for the British title and winning the Lonsdale Belt he craves so dearly.

Armstrong came out quickly looking to cause a big upset in the opening round but Dhami was able to use his experience and pick his man off with his biggest asset - his jab.

He then opened up a cut above both Armstrong’s eyes with uppercuts that rocked the Huddersfield man.

That was the pattern in the second but Dhami let him recover in the third. The Gravesend man upped the tempo in the fourth and fifth rounds and opened up another cut, this time under Armstrong’s left eye.

Dhami dominated the last round with Armstrong just content to see the fight through and Dhami picked up a comfortable 17th win in 23 fights

He said: “It was a hard fight because the bottom line is Armstrong was Central Area champion and was looking to get himself into the British top 10.

“This was a pressure fight for me to perform and although the was a bit of ring rust I performed well.

“I want to make myself the mandatory challenger for the title so whoever holds it (currently David Barnes) can’t dodge me.

“A lot of people will have wanted me to retire but I feel it’s my destiny to win the Lonsdale Belt - Harry's back!”
