Dhami receives knockout offer

KENT boxer Harry Dhami has been given a massive incentive to win his British welterweight title back - £50,000. The carrot has been dangled by an Asian businessman and fan who wants to see the Gravesend fighter make more history.

Dhami became the first British Asian boxing champion when he won the title and would have been the first to win the Lonsdale belt outright but he lost his third defence to Neil Sinclair,

The former champ admitted it was a huge fillip after a year he described as the worst of his life. He has been dogged by personal problems but has threatened to make his mark once again.

He said: "I was contacted by a freelance journalist friend of mine who told me about the offer and although it was a surprise it's given me a real incentive. Me winning the Lonsdale belt would have meant a lot for the heritage of British Asians. This businessman has apparently followed my career and was as gutted as I was by the defeat because I was so close.

"It's a huge boost for me that this man is willing to put his money where his mouth is. I thought about giving it all up but a lot of people have told me they wanted me to go on and this man obviously believes in me because he's willing to back me."

He added: "I was becoming a bit lackadaisical about the title but now I've got 50,000 reasons to get my title back and I'll certainly be giving it one more shot."
