Ebbsfleet United part company with manager Harry Watling by mutual consent after just 90 days in charge

Ebbsfleet manager Harry Watling has left the club after just 90 days in charge.

The decision comes with the Fleet rock bottom of the National League and on a 12-game winless league run after Tuesday night’s 2-0 loss at fellow strugglers AFC Fylde.

They are 11 points from safety and have gone 422 minutes without a goal in the league.

A club statement said: “Following discussions today between the club and Harry Watling, it has been mutually agreed to part ways.

“The club wishes to place on record our thanks to Harry for his efforts since joining in September. Josh Wright will take the role of first team manager going forward, assisted by David Kerslake.”

Watling was appointed on September 12 following the sacking of Danny Searle earlier that week.

He had most recently been on the coaching staff at Scottish giants Rangers, having worked at QPR before that.

Watling got off to a flying start, picking up what is still Ebbsfleet’s only league win of the season in his first game in charge - 1-0 at home to Hartlepool thanks to a Rakish Bingham goal.

But he found results - and goals - hard to come by, thereafter. Ebbsfleet scored just 11 goals in the 13 league games Watling took charge, collecting one win, four draws and suffering eight defeats.

Ebbsfleet were also knocked out of the FA Cup at Maidstone and the FA Trophy following a penalty shoot-out at Sutton.

Watling signed a host of new faces but the team never gelled and they lacked an identity to their play.

The last two league games have forced the Fleet board to act, Ebbsfleet being held at home to second-bottom Boston in a goalless draw before losing at an AFC Fylde side who were third-bottom before kick-off.

Watling signed a staggering 10 new players during his three months at Stonebridge Road, including three in the last week, but nothing he changed managed to alter the team’s fortunes.

Popular former Gillingham midfielder Josh Wright has again been placed in charge, as he was for one game after Searle’s September sacking. That match saw the Fleet draw 0-0 at home to Aldershot in a game they did enough to win and is regarded as their best performance of the season by many supporters.

Ebbsfleet travel to second-placed Barnet this Saturday in the National League.
