Leading scorer Dominic Poleon wants to stay at champions Ebbsfleet next season.
The 38-goal striker has fired the Fleet to the National League South title but speculation over his future has been increasing in recent weeks.
Speaking exclusively to KentOnline, Poleon was quick to shoot that down and is keen to get his future resolved as soon as the campaign is over.
“I want to stay, for sure,” revealed Poleon. “I’ve built up a good relationship with the fans, a good relationship with the team. I’m not looking to go anywhere.
“We’ll see what happens come the end of the season and take it from there but I’m firmly focused on Ebbsfleet.
“I’ve been focused on them from the start of the season, a few goals don’t really change that. Everything’s good here, I’ve got nothing to complain about.
“Hopefully we can get it wrapped up early doors and commit my future to the Fleet.
“I don’t want to say it’s a long way away but we’ve got four games to play and then we’ll get it sorted out.”
Poleon is in the goalscoring form of his life. In fact, he has scored the last nine goals that Ebbsfleet have netted in National League South.
The 29-year-old has never been happier playing football. That’s not to say the former Leeds, Oldham and AFC Wimbledon forward hasn’t been happy before, but this is his hottest-ever run in front of goal.
“Sometimes the stars align - how the team plays, what the manager wants you to do, the style of play, happiness, being comfortable,” said Poleon, who has even started smiling after scoring goals in recent weeks!
“They all play into how a footballer can perform on the pitch. Luckily, for this group of lads and myself it’s all aligned and everyone is playing really good football.
“There’s so many things that contribute to success and now we can look back and say it’s been a great season.”
Poleon’s joy at scoring goals has been tempered by a serious injury for strike partner and best buddy, Rakish Bingham.
He’s set to miss the start of next season after an Achilles operation last week but watched Poleon’s hat-trick against Oxford City on Friday from the stands.
Poleon raced to the Fleet dugout after scoring the opening goal and held aloft Bingham’s shirt.
“I was probably as disappointed as him that he got injured as I thought ‘where are my goals coming to come from!’” said Poleon, who has 36 National League South goals to his name.
“Even at Slough when I scored, I thought that’s for you bro. On Friday, me and the gaffer had a chat before the game that if I got one goal then I could hold his shirt up and dedicate it to him.
“Everyone has seen all season the partnership and the brotherhood that me and Raks have got.
“I’ve known him for many years and from the start of when I came to the club I said this is going to flourish. Season after season it’s flourished and you can see the results on the pitch.
“I’m gutted for him but everyone can see that Dom and Raks works. I wish him a speedy recovery and I can’t wait to have him back out on the field and to train and play with him again.
“The first goal he told me that he was holding back the tears. That’s my brother and I can’t wait to have him back and do what we’ve been doing again.”
Ebbsfleet travel to Braintree on Easter Monday and have four games of their title-winning campaign left.
But Poleon, who actually woke up unwell on Friday, insisted they won’t be taking it easy now they’ve clinched promotion.
“There’s still things we want to achieve, still records to break so we’ve just got to keep going,” he insisted.
“There was no way we were losing on Friday, seriously. No way. That’s going to be our approach for the rest of the games as well.
“Some people will think we’ve won the league now so we’ll take our foot off the pedal. But it’s the points record we can go for, the goals scored, and personally I can go for the goalscoring record. I’m just delighted we did it in front of our home fans.”
And on his run of scoring the Fleet’s last nine league goals, he added: “Usually, I say it’s my team but now I think I’m going to have to say it’s me!
“I’m joking, everyone’s happy and I’m so happy that our hard work has paid off. We’ve repaid everyone who works at the club, like I’ve been saying all season, we need to keep repaying them. We go into the next four games with the same mentality.”
