Ebbsfleet manager Danny Searle won’t be getting carried away with his team’s amazing run of form.
The Fleet made it four successive National League wins after a last-gasp Dominic Samuel goal against Rochdale last Saturday extended their unbeaten start under Searle to six games.
Without a game this weekend due to scheduled opponents Solihull Moors’ FA Trophy exploits, the Fleet boss won’t be looking anxiously at other results.
If anything, he wants the teams around Ebbsfleet in the relegation fight to be taking notice of what his charges are doing.
“Obviously, you get excited [at winning],” admitted Searle. “At the end of the game on Saturday I nearly ended up flat on my back as I slipped across the grass with the celebration, but thankfully Toby Edser saved me!
“You do get excited and I want the players to enjoy the feeling, they have to enjoy it, but when the dust settles for us as a staff, we have to prep and make sure we’re right and managing the injuries and seeing how everyone is.
“It’s different if you’ve already lifted a trophy or already secured the points you need to, then you can get carried away, but we haven’t. Until that day comes, we’re just going to focus on keeping this run going.
“I don’t think we need to worry about other teams’ results. Everything is in our hands. Who would have thought Dorking would beat Chesterfield? But it doesn’t matter because it only matters if we don’t do our job.
“We need to keep doing our job and not worry about everyone else. Let them take care of themselves and, if anything, let them worry about us.”
Ebbsfleet’s players continue to hit new heights under Searle’s positive management style.
He’s not been surprised by the quality they’ve shown so far, but their resilience has been a pleasant boost to the new man.
“I rated the squad highly and I said that when I first came in,” added the Fleet boss. “The biggest question about them was what was their character like and what are they like as a team when things go against you.
“We proved it at Dorking and Chesterfield, going goals down, we proved it on Saturday as we dominated large parts of the first half and then conceded an equaliser in the way we did.
“It comes back to character again, it’s not tactical or technical ability, it’s about character and what you are like. It helped us, as we went up another level.
“Am I surprised at the quality of the team from a technical and tactical perspective? No. Has the surprise come a little bit with regards to how much resilience is in the team? Probably a little bit, yes. It’s something I can’t praise them enough for.”
Searle named another unchanged starting XI against Rochdale. In fact, he’s made just three changes to the side in his first six games.
That continuity has been important but Luke O’Neill and Toby Edser came off injured against Rochdale so others could get their chance soon.
“We’re blessed with a big squad,” noted Searle. “We train in a way that everyone has to be ready.
“We have finishers, people on the bench who come on to finish the game for us. They’ve shown their capabilities.
“There’s people who have been in my squad and were not in the squad on Saturday who have shown that as well.
“Obviously, you don’t want players injured, you want that continuity, but we are prepared for the fact that we will have to make changes at some point.”
