Georgia-Mae Fenton’s bid for success at this weekend’s World Artistic Championships is a perfect experience as she eyes Paris 2024.
Gravesend’s Fenton, who helped secure Great Britain a place at the Olympics towards the end of last year, will now be looking for an impressive performance in Antwerp, representing GB for the sixth time at a World Championship.
Held at Antwerp’s Sportpelaleis, for eight days from this Saturday, the World Championships will see 500 elite-level gymnasts from 80 countries compete for a place on the podium.
As well as currently holding the World Championships silver team medal, Fenton is the 2018 and 2022 Commonwealth champion on uneven bars and a member of the gold medal-winning England team in 2022.
Commenting on being selected, Fenton said: “I was super happy to have been chosen for the team again this year.
“It was my main target to get to the World Championships after the success at the European Championships this year.
“With Paris coming up next year it’s important for me to get as much experience as possible, so I’m super proud.
“We’ve had a good year as a team, and we want to continue to push ourselves forward. We’ve been doing lots of preparation, so the plan is just to go out there and do our best.”
With Great Britain secured a place at the 2024 Olympics in Paris thanks to their success at the 2022 World Championships, that pressure is alleviated, however, the team are hopeful they can retain their 2022 team title and secure a podium spot.
Fenton, who was part of the World Championship team that won silver in Liverpool and a place at the Olympics, added: “This year, I’m really looking forward to being together as a team at the championships.
“We had so much fun last year, and I just want to keep that momentum going and any individual medals would be brilliant, but spending time with the girls and going out and competing together is the main part for me.”
