England's Ross Fisher is the new European Open champion after a scintilating display at The London Golf Club ended with a seven-shot victory.

The 27-year-old led the field from virtually his first tee shot on Thursday to when a 10-yard bunker shot dropped into the cup on Sunday to seal the championship win.

And, despite having never played the Ash course before, Fisher set a new course record of 63 during Thursday's opening round.

It was his second European Tour victory - following a win in Holland last year - and he finished on 20 under, seven shots clear of the Spaniard Sergio Garcia.

Fisher, who already qualified for the British Open, said: "This is a massive achievement.They say the second win is harder.I might have made it look easy but it certainly was not."

Thousands of golf fans descended on The London Golf Club to watch reigning champion Colin Montgomerie defend his title but the Scotfell short finishing on one-under after he shot a poor 77 during Sunday's blustery conditions.

Northern Ireland's Graeme McDowell finished third on 12-under followed by South African David Frost (11 under).

Benn Barham, who plays out of Chart Hills Golf Club in Ashford, finished 53rd on five over.
