Woking 2 Gravesend & Northfleet 2
ALEX VARNEY was denied a glorious Gravesend debut by Woking substitute Giuseppe Sole’s stupendous last-second equaliser at Kingfield on Tuesday night.
Varney filled the role of goalmaker and taker after making a dramatic impact as a 68th-minute substitute that ended a long, injury-enforced absence.
With Fleet trailing 1-0 to Sole’s 38th-minute free-kick, Varney triggered the revival when his 73rd-minute pass played in top-scorer Charlie MacDonald who finished clinically.
Varney looked certain to be acclaimed the match-winner in the 83rd minute when he pounced to score after the Woking defence failed to clear substitute Jon Keeling’s cross.
Mere seconds separated the Fleet from the victory when Sole cut inside and unleashed a ferocious left-foot drive from 25 yards that fizzed past startled goalkeeper Lance Cronin.
