Daryl McMahon admitted Ebbsfleet only had themselves to blame for dropping two points at Oxford City on Saturday.
Fleet led 1-0 at Marsh Lane until Bradley Bubb converted a 94th-minute penalty after Danny Kedwell had been shown a second yellow card for handball in the box.
McMahon's side played against 10 men for the last 16 minutes after Oxford midfielder Reece Fleet was shown a straight red card. But the National League South leaders couldn't add to their tally and then saw their lead wiped out with almost no time to respond.
McMahon said: "We created more than enough chances to win two games of football so we’ve only really got ourselves to blame. As long as the game was still 1-0, they’ve always got a puncher’s chance.
"We should have been out of sight but credit to them, they kept going.
"It’s hard because you don’t get what you deserve but that’s football and that’s life, I suppose."
Ebbsfleet were looking good when Aaron McLean headed them into an 18th-minute lead.
McMahon said: "I think we were looking good for the majority of the game. We created numerous chances and we should have been out of sight.
"In terms of the scoreline, you can be worried but the actual performance merited three points."
"It doesn’t feel like a defeat. They’re a very good sides and they’ll beat other sides as well.
"They’ve been terrific this season, Oxford. They’ve played some really good football and they’ve got some really good players but I felt we dominated the game and should have won."
Ebbsfleet are nine points clear at the top having played a game more than second-placed Maidstone and two more than Sutton, in third. They have the chance to extend that lead when second-bottom St Albans visit Stonebridge Road on Tuesday night.
McMahon said: "We’ve had two wins and a draw in the last three games so it’s not bad form and we look forward to Tuesday night.
"We’re disappointed with the result but happy with the performance."
