Fleet hold on for narrow victory

Crawley Town 1 – 2 Gravesend & Northfleet

GRAVESEND had a fine first half performance to thank as they notched up an away win at Crawley Town on Saturday.

Fleet took the lead after 23 minutes when debutant Bradley Johnson got on the end of a Bobby Bowry free-kick.

And it was 2-0 just two minutes later and again it was a set-piece that caused Crawley problems. This time it was Scott Gooding who played the ball in and Omari Coleman was in the right place to volley in a debut goal.

Fleet controlled the opening 70 minutes of the game but had to endure a nervous final 20 after Crawley Town pulled a goal back when Paul Armstrong was on hand to score after Craig Holloway had parried an initial shot by Simon Wormull.

Fleet survived some panicky moments in the final few minutes and will be relieved to take the points back to Stonebridge Road.

Gravesend: Holloway, Brett Johnson, Gooding, R Smith, J Smith, Bradley Johnson, Bowry (Jackson 73), Saunders, Drury, Coleman, MacDonald (Moore 45).
