Gravesend & Northfleet 2 - 0 Canvey Island

TEN-MAN Gravesend moved within two points of York in eighth place in the Nationwide Conference table with a hard-fought 2-0 win over Canvey Island at Stonebridge Road on Friday night.

Fleet took the lead seven minutes before half-time when defender Paul McCarthy was in the right place to head home Luke Moore's left-wing cross from close range.

Liam Daish's side suffered a blow five minutes into the second period when Brad Johnson was dismissed for a second yellow card.

But the home side held on and wrapped up the three points in the second minute of stoppage time when top scorer Charlie MacDonald netted at the second attempt after Canvey Island keeper Richard McKinney had parried his first effort.
