GRAVESEND have received a setback in attempts to re-open the Northfleet End of Stonebridge Road.

The covered end has been closed for safety reasons since February.

The club had been confident of having it re-opened for the start of the new campaign until there was a hitch over funding from the Football Foundation.

Fleet chairman Brian Kilcullen explained: "We have run into a problem with doing a full refurbishment of the Northfleet End.

"To qualify for a grant the club need to have the gradient of the steps in accordance with the Guide to Safety at Football Grounds.

"Applying the stipulated gradient all the way up the terrace would mean those at the back of the stand not being able to see properly with their heads close to the roof.

"At this stage the club are therefore planning on refurbishing to halfway back on the terrace and looking at options for the remainder of the terrace."

He added: "The capacity for that end will still be around 800 people and the higher steps will be under cover."

Meanwhile, the Fleet celebrate 100 years of football at Stonebridge Road on Monday when Premier League neighbours Charlton are the visitors for the club’s final pre-season friendly.

Admission is £10 adults and £5 concessions. The match kicks off at 7.45pm.

The club have confirmed the departure of their sales and marketing manager Barry Wickenden.
