Fleet thumped by Conference new boys

Grays Athletic 6 - 1 Gravesend & Northfleet

GRAVESEND manager Liam Daish warned his players that he will not tolerate shrinking violets as he kicked over the debris of Tuesday’s 6-1 rout away to newly-promoted Grays.

Daish kept his players behind a locked dressing room door 30 minutes after the final whistle before emerging with an early double-barrel blast ahead of Saturday’s second derby in five days at Canvey.

He said: "I want these players to take on as a group what it’s all about surviving at this level."

Then warned: "We’ve given players full-time opportunities, they’ve one crack at it and this could be their last chance, so they had better make the most of it."

A hat-trick from Gray's John Martin did the bulk of the damage on Tuesday. His treble was added to by Dennis Oli, Glenn Poole and substitute Jamie Slabber.

The Fleet were already 3-0 down before Charlie MacDonald scored their consolation.

To add to Gravesend's misery, goalkeeper Andy Keer was sent off in the second half.

Gravesend: Kerr, Gooding, Smith, McCarthy, Skinner (Glozier 68), Slatter, Bowry (Omoyinmi 45), Saunders, Jackson, MacDonald, Grant (Mott 70). Subs Not Used: Surey, Drury.

Attendance: 1,562.
