Greg Cundle wants more goals and more assists as he looks to go one better in every sense with Ebbsfleet this season.

The 25-year-old scored just three goals in 24 starts last season but has already netted twice so far this term, including a stunning strike in Saturday’s 4-2 defeat of Farnborough.

Cundle started his career at Gillingham as a forward and has only converted into a deeper role in the past two seasons, but he showed he still has a striker’s instinct.

“It’s still in there somewhere,” said Cundle. “We work on it with the strikers and the other wingers every week.

“I know I can improve in that position and get more goals and assists to help the team.

“More goals, more assists than last year - that’s how I want to improve. I’m on my way to do that, and I just want to stay injury-free and play as many games as I can.”

On his strike against Farnborough, Cundle added: “I’m happy with that one.

“It did cross my mind to hit it first time, it looked appealing but I knew the right decision was to take a touch.

“I didn’t have anyone around me so I knew I could set myself and thankfully it hit the back of the net.”

The left wing-back only made one substitute appearance in the final four months of last season, watching on from the sidelines as the Fleet’s promotion dream was shattered at Dorking in the play-off final.

Four wins out of four so far this time around has shown there’s been no hangover among the Fleet squad.

“We’re happy to go one game at a time and keep putting the three points on the board,” said Cundle, as Ebbsfleet set the early pace in National League South.

“From day one I think the gaffer tried to make sure that (the play-off final) was out at the back of our minds.

“We had new players coming in, obviously, and that helped. From the first day it was forget about it and onto the season.

“We said it’s happened and behind us. We were disappointed but we’ve come back refreshed.

“We were a minute away - less than - so we know that we’re good enough to do it. We’ve just got to go out there and prove it.

“It was tough towards the back end of last season but I’ve come back fully fit and ready to go.

“There was a good three-month spell when I was watching the boys and, to be fair, there was a spell towards the end of the season when we did really well and ground out results to keep the pressure on the teams above us, but it wasn’t meant to be.”

Cundle was arguably Ebbsfleet’s stand-out player last season until injury cut short his campaign.

But he’s keen not to rest on his laurels and is still learning his trade in a relatively new role.

“Just playing the game and playing the position is a big help,” he added. “You pick things up as you go, watch other players and see what they do well in that role. It’s a mix of attacking but you’ve got to help the team out and defend as well when you have to, and I’m still working on that side.

“I wouldn’t have said that comes naturally, having to track back to the edge of my box to win the ball back, it’s not natural, but I like to think I’m a quick learner.

“I speak to people who I went to school with and they hear I’m a left wing-back now and they can’t believe it but as long as I’m playing then I’m happy.”
